Intercooler sprayer

how things work

Intercooler Waterspray

When air flows over something wet there is added cooling. A typical waterspray kit is usually triggered by boost pressure. By using a pressure switch, such as a Hobbs switch, a small pump can be used to spray water over the intercooler, when a certain boost level is reached. Additionally, if the mist is fine enough it may be able to cool the air before it reaches the intercooler (in theory anyway). In a recent magazine test in Australia it was found that a waterspray kit allowed a 12% drop in temperature, which generated an extra 6% power on a dyno. This was achieved on an intercooler that was front mounted and the intercooler being sprayed with copious amounts of water. It may be advantageous to use a computer controlled unit with a temperature probe fitted. This way the system does'nt need to operate on cold days, requiring you to fill up the tank excessively often.
