Turbo timers

how things work

What is a Turbo Timer?

Turbo timers keep the engine idling for a specified period of time after the owner has switched off the ignition and removed the key. Why would you need to idle down your car you might ask? After a period of hard driving the car should be allowed to idle for between 1-3 minutes to allow circulating engine oil to dissipate most of the excess heat that has built up in the turbo. Failing to do this can lead to increased thermal stress on the turbo (particularly bearings), and in severe cases can literally "fry" the now stationary engine oil, turning it into useless sludge. Continued abuse can also lead to "coking" of internal components.
If you own a turbo car the chances are you have an expensive engine. Turbo timers can be purchased for around NZ\$200. It is a cheap device to protect your engine. The cost of rebuilding the turbo will cost way more than this.
